Since I first tried ChromaPop lenses, it's been hard to use anything but! Their ChromaPop lens technology filters light at two specific wavelengths, eliminating color confusion to the brain and providing a sharper, more defined visual experience. Choose from 12 tint options, depending on your color preference and what conditions you most frequently ski. Lenses: These goggles come with two of Smith's ChromaPop 4D lenses - one for bright days, and another for low light. They used all of the features that have led me to almost always land on Smith's when reaching for a pair of goggles for the past few years. To complement this new tech, Smith carried over plenty of their best features from previous years - think the I/O Mag and I/O7. And that leads me to conclude that the distortion is negligible, since you actually can see more of the mountain - top, bottom, side to side - without any obstructions or distortion when it matters most - on the downhill. That being said, I am very pleased that I never (not once!) noticed this distortion when skiing downhill, unless I was trying to find it. When I first put on the goggles, it's all I could focus on! Riding up the first few chairlifts, I was very distracted by this sort of blurry-ness out of the bottom of the lens. The one semi-negative here is that the bottom curved edge of the lens is definitely distorted. It's a super neat design feature!īut BirdsEye Vision is not perfect - let me explain. That's a pretty big deal! I noticed that when looking straight ahead, I could see all the way down to my boots, with no padding or frame material obstructing my view. No other brand is doing this yet, and Smith says it will increase your field of vision by up to 25%. These goggles, unlike any other goggle, have a lens that curves downward and extends beyond the frame of the goggle. The most exciting new element in Smith's 4D Mag is what they call BirdsEye Vision. I had the chance to put these babies to the test in Breckenridge and Vail, Colorado, and want to tell you that they are entirely worth the cost! Smith has carried over years of the latest and greatest updates, with one new standout feature, in this unique new offering. What's new? The latest and greatest from Smith is their 4D Mag ChromaPop goggle. And Smith Optics is still at the forefront of snow-goggle tech, just as they have been since their birth in Sun Valley, Idaho in 1965. So if you ride more than a few times a year, it's about time you invested in a high-quality pair of ski or snowboard goggles. Because subpar ski goggles are one of the most common reasons that people call it quits early - or even worse, hurt themselves!Ĭheap, old-school, or ill-fitting goggles do it all wrong: The lenses fog up too easily, they bounce around on your head all day, they don't shield you from the cold properly, they don't protect your eyes from the sun, and our top reason - cheap goggles typically only work when light conditions are ideal, which makes it super tough to see on anything but a sunny, bluebird day. "But why are goggles such a big deal?" some might ask. But tied for a close second are skis that match your ability, a jacket that suits your home mountain's conditions, and a high quality pair of snow goggles. Most skiers argue that a proper-fitting ski boot is the most important part of your setup, and we agree. That means doing plenty of research and outfitting yourself with gear that will rise to the occasion when you put it to the test. To truly be confident and carefree on the mountain, we have to start with the right equipment. The Brief: For the latest and greatest in goggle tech, Smith's 4D Mag leads the way.
